A great, old friend of mine - Mike Lind - died last month. He lived in Colorado, and I live in New York so we didn’t see a lot of each other, but we talked on the phone at least once a week to stay in touch. He was only 30 years old, and was not ill. Nobody knows why or how he died. I found this quote from Gabriel Garcia Marquez and thought it would be good to share.
“Always say what you feel, and do what you think is good and right. If I knew that today would be the last time I’d see you, I would hug you tight and pray the Lord be the keeper of your soul. If I knew that this would be the last time you pass through this door, I’d embrace you, kiss you, and call you back for one more. If I knew that this would be the last time I would hear your voice, I’d take hold of each word to be able to hear it over and over again. If I knew this is the last time I see you, I’d tell you I love you, and would not just assume foolishly you know it already.” - - Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Fuck the South: “Fuck the South. Fuck ‘em. We should have let them go when they wanted to leave. But no, we had to kill half a million people so they’d stay part of our special Union. Fighting for the right to keep slaves - yeah, those are states we want to keep.
And now what do we get? We’re the fucking Arrogant Northeast Liberal Elite? How about this for arrogant: the South is the Real America? The Authentic America. Really? “

“Pelorat said, “It seems to me, Golan, that the advance of civilization is nothing but the limiting of privacy”
“Pelorat sighed. ‘I will never understand people.’
‘There’s nothing to it. All you have to do is take a close look at yourself and you will understand everyone else. … You show me someone who can’t understand people and I’ll show you someone who has built up a false image of himself - no offense intended.”
“‘He didn’t believe that surely.’
‘Of course not! But he had to pretend he did, as otherwise he would have had no choice but to be insulted. And since there would be nothing he could do about that, being insulted would only lead to humiliation. And since he didn’t want that, the simplest path to follow was to believe what I said’”
“‘So? Interesting!’ said Gendibal with no obvious conviction. ‘And better yet. To know when a truth will do is admirable, since no nontruth can be presented with the same sincerity. Palver once said, ‘The closer to the truth, the better the lie, and the truth itself, when it can be used, is the best lie.’”
“Pelorat turned to him. ‘No, Golan. It’s not at all unlikely. Societies create their own history and tend to wipe out lowly beginnings, either by forgetting them or inventing totally fictitious heroic rescues’”
